Meaning:

How long do we really have?
How little time we have here!

1
This body is a source of sorrow,
a dwelling place for many seeds of disease.
How fragile is the thread that keeps life within us!
When we truly think about it, how astonishing life is.

2
Our time is only a few finger-widths long,
and this earthly life passes like a story.
One day this frail body will become weak and helpless,
a dwelling place for germs.

3
Like actors in a play, people move across this world.
But when the time comes, we will lay aside our roles;
death approaches swiftly,
and our time on earth comes to an end.

4
What will wives and children gain
when wealth and earthly strength are gone?
While we have money, we celebrate and spend;
when the money is gone, we run about in desperation.

5
When we prosper, our relatives and friends
think highly of us; but in difficult times,
they may be filled with sorrow and tears.
What is there left for us then?
6
A person may rule a kingdom today,
but tomorrow he could be begging for food.
He may have no food to eat
and no glimpse of what he once possessed.

7
Today you may see people living proudly
in magnificent mansions.
But tomorrow, they may lie helplessly
upon the bare ground, mourning their fate.
