Meaning:
What amazing love, O Father,
What love You have shown to this sinner!
O Lord of all,
How can I ever describe the love
You have shown to such a wretched sinner as me?
1.
O loving Lord,
You sent Your beloved Son—
The One who was always close to Your heart,
Surrounded by joy and love—
Down into this troubled and suffering world
For our sake.
2.
How could Your eyes bear to see
Your precious Son, Your beloved treasure,
Lying in the garden and pleading with you?
How could You watch
The blood flowing from His precious body
And falling upon the earth?
3.
O Lord, the merciless men
Beat Your beloved Son's holy body
Again and again with whips,
Leaving Him bruised and broken.
Then they forced Him to carry the cross
So that He could be crucified.
4.
Exhausted by thirst and hunger,
His hands and feet grew weak.
His body was overwhelmed with pain,
His whole being suffered in agony.
And yet, O Father,
Your love only grew greater
For this wreched sinner.
5.
There He goes,
The spotless Lamb,
Walking among His enemies.
The daughters of Jerusalem
Saw His suffering,
Beat their chests in sorrow,
And cried out in anguish.
6.
Wash me clean in the blood
That flowed from His pierced side.
Then, taking me by Your precious hand,
Lead me safely to the new Jerusalem.
Jesus, You are my refuge—
Please bring me home to You.
