Meaning:
What a blessed dwelling this is!
How glorious it must be,
shining continually with gold, silver, and precious stones.
Surely I am blessed to have such a dwelling!
1. The Courtyard
White linen curtains surround the courtyard,
held up by pillars with bronze bases and fittings.
The beautiful workmanship represents believers
who have put on the righteousness of Christ.
The courtyard teaches us about righteousness
and gives us a beautiful picture
of Christ's holy and purified Church.
2. The Entrance and the Altar
Inside the one entrance stands the holy altar of sacrifice,
and beside it is the basin.
From the basin, the priests took water
to wash and cleanse themselves.
The meaning is this:
through Jesus, we must come to the place of salvation,
and we must be washed and cleansed
in the spiritual fountain of His grace
as we serve in God's holy sanctuary.
3. The Holy Place
Inside, a curtain of four colors hangs.
There are the table, the lampstand,
and the altar of incense.
Look carefully at what these represent:
-
The table and its offering — the Word of God / spiritual nourishment.
-
The lampstand — God's light and His Word.
-
The incense altar — prayer, thanksgiving, and devotion.
These holy things teach us
how to live attentively and faithfully before God.
4. The Most Holy Place
Beyond the inner curtain is the Most Holy Place.
There is the Ark of the Covenant,
containing the tablets of the Law,
Aaron's rod, and the manna.
Above it is the mercy seat,
with golden cherubim.
The glorious presence of God—the Shekinah—
shines there.
This is the dwelling place of God,
a holy place that teaches us
about His presence, judgment,
and the salvation He provides.
5. The Structure and Its Sacred Treasures
The walls are made from boards of acacia wood,
covered and secured with gold.
Everything is carefully arranged and protected,
without allowing anything to be done carelessly.
God commanded that the sacred furnishings
be guarded and maintained faithfully.
If we carefully preserve
the spiritual treasures entrusted to us,
we will receive the reward
and blessing that come from faithful service.
Overall meaning
The song isn't merely describing the physical Tabernacle. It treats the Tabernacle as a spiritual picture:
Courtyard → cleansing and righteousness → Holy Place → Word, light, prayer → Most Holy Place → God's presence.
The repeated idea is that believers are called to move closer to God, through Christ, into holiness, worship, prayer, and ultimately fellowship with God's presence.
