The Daughter of Zion fell;
She sank into a sea of sorrow.
When she saw the sacred body
Of her beloved Lord upon the cross, she fell.
“Who is this that I see?
Is this my beloved Lord,
Hanging there upon the nails?
How can I bear this?”
“Where shall I go now?
Where is there a place for me?
I can see nothing—alas, I see nothing!
O Emmanuel,
Have You truly left me all alone and gone away?”
With a heart struck down as by thunder,
She cried aloud—and fell.
O King, ocean of grace,
My heart is melting within me
As You look upon me
With such tender love.
O those eyes of Yours!
How they kindle within me
The fire of love
And make it burn so brightly!
Yet You stand before me
With Your eyes tightly closed,
Not looking at me even once.
She cried these words through her tears,
And fell.
From Your precious lips,
From which flowed words sweeter than honey and milk,
Came the supreme nourishment
That satisfies every hunger and thirst.
O my Beloved,
You once filled my soul
With perfect joy
And completely satisfied my deepest longing.
But now, why are Your precious lips closed?
Her heart burned within her
As she stood before Him.
Crying out again and again,
“Why are Your lips closed?”
She fell.
Because of the love
You had placed within my heart,
You once called me,
“My beloved, my love,
My dove.”
You came and kissed
Both my cheeks,
And filled my whole being
With Your love.
O those golden hands
That held me close
And tenderly embraced me!
“My precious One,
Have You come to be stretched out
Upon this cross?”
With these words,
She cried out and fell.
