Meaning:
Here is a modern English translation. Some of the opening imagery is archaic/poetic, so I’ve rendered it for meaning rather than word-for-word:
O Shulammite Mother, O Lord of Salem, our Father!
Let all of us bow our heads and use our tongues
To praise Your glory.
1
Before the foundations of the world were laid, O Lord,
You remembered us in Your love.
And even beyond the end of this age,
You remain the source and fulfillment of our hope.
2
Through Your life-giving Word,
You brought Your servants to new life
And gave them goodness and grace.
Through Your death, the fear of sin was removed,
And by Your righteousness they entered into life.
3
As long as we live on this earth,
May we devote ourselves to Your glory.
Rather than seeking earthly pleasures,
May we rejoice in remembering You,
Even when the time comes for us to depart this life.
4
When days of danger and difficulty come,
May our anxieties disappear as we experience Your wonderful presence.
Give us the grace and strength to serve You,
And come to us as the way by which every weakness within us is removed.
