My Savior

Participants : Christie, Thomson & Merril

Th.    Hello Christie, what are you reading? Why do you feel so sad?

Ch.    Hi Thomson, I was reading a story from this book. In fact it was a real incident, which happened years ago. It was so tragic, that I was so shocked as I finished it!

Th.    What was that story Christie? Can you tell us also?

Ch.    Sure, I will. This incident occurred years ago in a small village of England. As you know, in olden days the means of transport was very limited and the people used horse carts to cover distances through the land.

Mer.  Yes, people used bullock carts also no?

Ch. You are right, Merril.  During such a time a small family was traveling in a horse cart from one village to another. They were only four people, the father, the mother and their two small kids. They started their journey early during the daytime. But heavy rain delayed them and they could not reach their destination before night.

Th.    Oh very sad, how did they travel in the dark? Those days there were no electric lights, No?

Ch.    Yes, they really had a very hard time during that night. But the real problem was yet to come. This small family had to pass through a jungle that night to reach their destination.

Mer.  Jungle? At night? I can’t even imagine that!

Ch.    They had no choice but to continue their journey! And as they continued through the valley of that jungle, the worse thing was waiting for them!

Th.    Oh, Now what?

Ch.    A herd of cruel wolfs were waiting for them.

Mer.  Wolfs! My God!, did they took their gun to shoot?

Ch.    No, Merril, they had no gun with them! And I don’t think anyone used a gun in those days!

Th.    Then what did they do?

Ch.    They tried to ride fast. But it was so dark and the road was full of mud.  They couldn’t ride faster anymore!  And the hungry wolfs began to attack the horse!

Mer.  Did the children start crying?

Ch.    Not only the children, their mother too started crying! They all shouted for help! But there was no one to help them in that jungle. The father tried to whip the wolfs away, But the hungry cruel animals were not ready to leave their meal that night.

The father had to take a decision very fast. He knew that if the horse was killed, they had no chance to escape from the wolfs. Sure the hungry wolfs will turn to the kids once they finish the horse! So he turned to his wife and said, “Dear, we have no choice now, please… ride away for the sake of our kids! I will try to stop these animals”. And without waiting for an answer from his wife, he jumped into the midst of the devilish foxes. He fought with all his might to save the horse and the cart from those animals.   But do you want to hear what those cruel hungry wolfs did?

Th.    What did they do?

Ch.    Poor father! The wolfs attacked him. And he became their prey that day! Long away in the darkness the mother and the two children rode away without knowing what had happened! And they reached their house safely.

Th.    The father was a very kind and loving person. Isn’t it?

Mer.  Sure he was, he gave his own life to save his family.

Friends, this story reminds us of another person who has given his life for the whole world. Can you say who was that?

Th.    I know, I know,  It’s Jesus Christ. He came to this world and died for our sins.

Ch.    Yes Jesus Christ, Just like the father jumped into the midst of the wolfs, Jesus came to this world to save each one of us. He has shed his blood on the cruel cross to wash our sin. And because of his wounds and stripes we are healed. What we have to do is just to accept his Lordship. We must also thank him for his sufferings on the cruel cross.

Thomson: This story reminds me of that wonderful hymn “Alas and did my savior bleed”

Christie: Yes I think we should sing that son now.

Th. & Mer. YES we will.

Alas! and did my Savior bleed? And did my Sov’reign die?

Would He devote that sacred head, For such a worm as I?

Was it for crimes that I had done, He groaned upon the tree?

Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree!

Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut his glories in,

When Christ, the mighty Maker, died For man the creature’s sin.

Thus might I hide my blushing face, While His dear Cross appears,

Dissolve my heart in thankfulness, And melt my eyes to tears.

But drops of grief can ne’er repay, The debt of love I owe;

Here, Lord, I give myself away, It’s all that I can do.
